Glossary
Accessory |
A component that does not have electrical properties. Examples include connector backshell, cable tie, and cable clamp. |
Atomic |
A single irreducible unit or component in a larger system. |
BOM |
Bill of Materials |
Black box |
A component whose boundary connections are defined, but whose internal structure is not defined. |
Boundary connection |
The interface between a component and system, includes conductor attach points and connectors. |
Cable junction |
Like a connection for a conductor, a cable junction joins cable segments in a cable diagram. It is a logical connection that allows the user to define physical lengths. |
Component |
A part or element of a Wiring Planner model, or a reusable element in a library. |
Conductor |
A wire, fiber or tube with a single flow path. A conductor may carry energy, data, or matter. |
A device for attaching a conductor to a black box without a mating connector. |
Connector |
An object used to connect two separate conductors. The basic definition of a connector is a component which has 0..* (zero to many) wire connections, and 0..* valid mates. By this definition a connector, a contact and a terminal are all "connectors". |
Connection |
A device to connect two or more conductors. Examples of connections include a solder joint, a crimp splice and a solder sleeve. A connection appears on a diagram as a filled circle. |
Element of Definition |
A type. A component that defines the properties of another component. |
Element of Usage |
A component that inherits properties from another component. An instance of a component. |
Group Node |
A filled circle on a connector with no contacts exposed. A group node represents one or more contacts. |
Instance |
A component that inherits properties from another component, often referred to as as "element of usage". |
Instantiate |
To create in instance of a library component. |
Library |
A collection of elements that may be instantiated in a model. |
Model |
A simplified representation (an abstraction) that defines and communicates a reality or a concept. |
Panel Planner |
An application produced by One Mile Up for creating instrument panel layouts. |
Part |
A component that belongs to another component. For example, a Contact is a part of a connector; a conductor is a part of a cable; a connector is a part of a black box. |
Passive Component |
Components that do not generate signals or energy. Examples include switches, rectifiers and fuses. In Wiring Planner, a passive component is modeled as a symbol with conductor attach points and/or connectors. |
Project |
A collection of data and diagrams that are compiled to define a specific task. |
Potential mate |
A contact or connector that has physical characteristics including subtype and number of contacts that do not prevent it from mating with a given connector. |
Subtype |
A variation of a model element. For example, a connector can be a plug or a receptacle, and a contact can be a pin or a socket. |
Type |
A library component used to define another component, often referred to as "element of definition". |
Untype |
To break the link between an instance and its type so that inherited properties may be changed. |
Valid mate |
Connectors that can be mated with other connectors. Contacts that can be mated with other contacts. Valid mates are defined by the Valid Mate attribute as well as physical properties such as number of contacts in a connector or connector/contact subtype. |
